What is DOU-GABIBI?

DOU-GABIBI is a video-specific degradation tool born as a sister service to the image degradation tool "GABIBI". It intentionally transforms high-definition video into textures with "information loss" and "noise", providing a nostalgic yet fresh visual experience reminiscent of early 2000s internet videos or footage from older-generation mobile phones.

How It Works

This tool applies the same degradation algorithm as GABIBI to each frame of the video, then reassembles them to degrade the entire video.

  • Step 1: Frame Decomposition
The video is extracted frame by frame as still images.
  • Step 2: Per-Frame Degradation
Downsampling (resolution reduction) and recursive JPEG compression are applied to each frame. This imprints digital-specific artifacts such as block noise and color bleeding onto each frame.
  • Step 3: Upscale & Reassemble
Each degraded frame is stretched back to its original size and recombined into a video at the specified frame rate. The result is a unique video that blends choppy frame-by-frame motion with crunchy, pixelated quality.

Use Cases

DOU-GABIBI is perfect for the following creative uses.

  • Social Media Short Videos: Create intentionally "broken" footage on TikTok and Instagram Reels that stands out among high-quality content.
  • Music Video / Film Material: Use nostalgic low-quality effects or flashback scene production in music videos and art films.
  • VJ / Live Visuals: Combine with real-time footage as material for glitchy visual performances.
  • Retro Game Style: Add a lo-fi atmosphere to gaming streams or presentation videos.

Privacy-Conscious Design

DOU-GABIBI performs all video processing in your browser (local environment). Uploaded video data is never sent to or stored on external servers.

⚠ Processing Load

DOU-GABIBI processes every frame of the video as an image one by one in the browser, so processing may take time depending on settings and data. Please refer to the following guidelines for a smooth experience.

  • Video Length: 10 seconds or less recommended
Processing time is roughly proportional to video length. Videos over 30 seconds may take several minutes. Try a short clip first to check the result, then process your final video once you are satisfied with the settings.
  • Lower Frame Rate (FPS) = Faster Processing
Lowering FPS reduces the number of frames to process, significantly speeding things up. For example, FPS 5 means 50 frames for a 10-second video, while FPS 30 means 300 frames — a 6x difference. For a retro feel, 5-10 FPS can achieve great results.
  • Keep Recursion Count (Loops) Low
Loop count multiplies per frame. 10 frames x 30 loops = 300 JPEG compression operations. Start with 3-5 and increase as needed for efficiency.
  • Higher Resolution = Heavier Processing
4K video has 4x the pixels of Full HD, making processing proportionally heavier. Pre-resizing to around 720p in a video editor can dramatically improve processing speed.

As a guideline, with settings of 10 sec, 720p, FPS 10, Loops 5, processing completes in roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute on a typical PC browser.
