What is GABIBI?
GABIBI is a creative tool that intentionally transforms modern high-resolution digital images into textures with "information loss" and "noise".
It transforms photos taken with the latest cameras and beautifully rendered illustrations into nostalgic yet fresh visuals reminiscent of early 2000s internet culture and mobile phone wallpapers.
How It Works
This tool doesn't simply reduce image quality — it combines the following processes to recreate a unique texture.
- Step 1: Downsampling
The image is temporarily shrunk to a fraction of its size, thinning out pixel information.
- Step 2: Recursive JPEG Compression
JPEG encoding is applied repeatedly to the reduced image. By layering JPEG-specific "block noise" and "color boundary bleeding" multiple times, organic digital noise is added to the flat image.
- Step 3: Upscaling
The degraded small image is forcefully stretched back to its original size. This process blurs pixels together, creating that distinctive crunchy, pixelated texture.
Use Cases
GABIBI is perfect for the following creative uses.
- Social Media Visuals: Create eye-catching lo-fi post materials that stand out among high-quality photos on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).
- Design Material Processing: For website backgrounds and banner materials when you want to create a "raw" or "retro" feel.
- Creative Spice: As components for glitch art, cyberpunk aesthetics, or artwork expressing fragments of memory.
Privacy-Conscious Design
GABIBI performs all image processing in your browser (local environment). Uploaded image data is never sent to or stored on external servers.
